The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has launched its new online application portal ‘myAMSA’ for near coastal certificates of competency – allowing seafarers to apply online, anywhere, anytime.

AMSA Executive Director of Operations, Michael Drake, said the portal would save seafarers from having to travel to a post office to apply for a near coastal ticket, which was the only option prior to the launch of myAMSA.

“We’re committed to being a modern regulator, and that means providing simple and effective digital solutions for our customers. myAMSA is an online application portal which will save seafarers time, and streamline the application process for near coastal tickets,” Mr Drake said.

myAMSA allows near coastal seafarers to start, save, submit and track an application – including receiving SMS or email status updates as it progresses – entirely online, giving them more control and visibility of the process than ever before.

“If you were standing in line at the post office and realised you had forgotten part of your supporting documentation for a near coastal application, you would have to travel home to get it,” Mr Drake said.

“With myAMSA, you can save an incomplete application and return to where you left off, so there is no time lost if you need to source missing supporting documentation and come back to it later to submit the completed application.”

myAMSA uses the Australian Government’s ‘myID’ Digital ID app to securely verify your identity. myID is managed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and it is used to verify identity for many other government services.

“All you need to get started with myAMSA is a myID account. Once you log into your myAMSA account, you’ll get your own unique AMSA ID.

If you’re an existing seafarer with a near coastal ticket, you’d already have an AMSA ID which you can find on your certificate of competency card.

“I’d encourage all existing near coastal seafarers to log into myAMSA today and set up their notification preferences – you can even choose to receive reminders from myAMSA about upcoming renewals,” Mr Drake said.

You can find out more information about myAMSA on AMSA’s website, and get started straight away by logging into myAMSA today
