The winner will be a VTS or an employee/s of a VTS that has gone above and beyond their normal operational scope to make a significant difference to one or more of the following principles:
- Safety of life at sea
- Safety and efficiency of navigation
- The protection of the marine environment.
The VTS Award was established by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) in 2019 to recognise outstanding contributions by a VTS.
AMSA Chief Executive Officer Mick Kinley said: “This prestigious award provides an opportunity to recognise people involved in VTS across Australia. We aim to raise the profile of VTS authorities and the services they provide in the maritime industry”.
Last year’s award was won by Ports Victoria for their exceptional efforts to avert a maritime crisis. The quick-thinking and resourceful VTS team prevented multiple emerging collisions and multi-million-dollar damage to maritime infrastructure and assets and avoided potential pollution.
The Port Authority of New South Wales Sydney VTS team was highly commended for its role in a joint operation with NSW Police coordinating the resupply, refuel and crew changeover of 1200 people from across five cruise ships in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nominations are open to VTS authorities and their employees until 5pm, Monday 28 February 2022.
